The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge is the oldest Anglican mission agency, founded in 1698. One of their founder members, Thomas Bray, was set to sail to Maryland on behalf of the Bishop of London. In order to continue with his good works in his absence, his friends decided to found the Society. Although Bray did return after only a few months, the Society made it its aim to spread the Christian Faith, especially through the ministry of Christian eductaion and literature. During the 18 th century, the Society became the largest publisher of Christian literature. The range covered pamphlets aimed at specific groups such as farmers, prisoners, soldiers, seamen, servants and slave-owners, to more general religious works as well as on educational topics. The prints in this section show animals, beautifully wood engraved in original hand-colouring, with explanatory text below. Each page measures 27 x 34 cm.
