John Augustus Atkinson (1775-1831/3) was a soft-ground etcher and aquatint engraver of historical subjects, costumes and humorous illustrations. In 1784, he travelled to Russia where his uncle had entered the service of the Empress Catherine. He stayed there until 1801, painting Russian subjects. On his return to to England, he published his Costume books. – Plate size 23,5 x 17 cm; original coloured aquatints. Each plates comes with text.
