Johann Friedrich Justin Bertuch (Weimar 1747- 1822) after studying theology and law, he worked as a house teacher for an aristocratic family before taking up employment at the local newspaper in Weimar. In 1775, he became private secretary to the Regent Karl August who introduced him to Goethe with whom he struck up a very close friendship. Very soon after his appointment, he made the acquaintance of the painter Georg Melchior Kraus from Frankfurt who gave him the idea of founding a school for drawing and painting. There he met with many talented artists who were necessary when in 1790, he embarked on his greatest and most demanding work, the Bilderbuch fur Kinder , a comprehensive compilation of 14 subjects, covering Botany, Zoology, Architecture and many more, with text in German and French. The 12 volume strong encyclopdia with over 1100 original hand-coloured copper engravings was meant as an introduction for children into the world of general knowledge. – Plate size is 22 x 18 cm.
