Buffon (1707-1788) was born into an aristocratic family in Burgundy, France, and became Keeper of the Royal Garden in Paris, making it the centre for scientific studies and experiments. He set out to compile a book containing all that was known about the Natural World. His Histoire Naturelle… consisted of 15 volumes followed by another seven of which the last one was not published until after his death. –
