This map shows Japan, the East cast of China and Korea. Nice decorative cartouche and vignettte. Latin text on verso. Decorated with sailing ships.

First ever published map of Japan in an atlas as a first state! Ortelius was a cosmographer, cartographer and publisher in Antwerp who started off as a map colourist in 1547. He travelled to Italy and France with G. Mercator. In 1575, he was appointed ?Royal Geographer? to King Philip of Spain. He is best known for his work ?Theatrum Orbis Theatrum?. Luis Teixeira was the cartographer to the court of King Philip of Spain. His manuscript map is the origin of Ortelius? map of Japan.
