This map is based on Speed's map of the Isle of Man. It shows the Royal coat-of-arms as well as the Manx coat-of-arms. The Island is surrounded by various battle ship and has a small cartouche embellished with fish.
Willem Janssonius Blaeu was the founded of one of the most famous publishing companies of globes, charts and maps of the 16th century. The firm was founded in 1596; in 1672, a fire destroyed the premises and all the instruments, stock and plates and ruined the business. - Willem adopted the Blaeu in c1621 to differentiate his family and firm from the Johannes Janssonius family. He worked closely together with his 2 sons Joan (I) and Cornelis who, in turn, were succeeded bu Joan's (I) sons Willem, Pieter and Joan (II).
