This map is from ‘A Complete System of Geography…, by E. Bowen (1693-67), one of the most important map and printsellers and engravers of 18th century London who became Engraver of Maps to George II of England and Louis XV of France. Thomas Kitchin and Thomas Jefferys became his apprentices; the former also became his son-in-law.

Size
43.5 x 54 cm; copper; Amsterdam; folded map; nice patina; a few small faint stains; one repaired small tear lower margin just touching rhombline. – Van Meurs (1619-80) was a map publisher, engraver and book seller in Amsterdam. He worked together with his wife who continued after his death. The map has a nice decorative cartouche and one vignette without any inscription. There are several ships and sea creatures in the sea as well as elephants, monkeys, tigers, ostriches and rhinos within the map. Very unusual and decorative!
