Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672 – 1733) was born in Switzerland as the son of the town physician. He studied in medecine and mathematics in various European cities, returned to his home town where he was instated as junior town physician. Shortly afterwards, he obtained professorship in mathematics and was promoted to chair of physics. Months before his death, he was made senior town physician in Zurich. – He published c 34 works, most of them relating to scientific subjects. He even published one of the first large scale maps of Switzerland, engraved by E. Schalch. Being also known for his interest in palaeontology, he had a fossilised sceleton named after him. – The here shown copper engraved plates are from his description of the natural history as depicted in the Bible, comprising well over 700 plates with animal and floral engravings with the relevant verse reference, given in Latin and German. – The highly decorative plates, expertly coloured by modern hand, measure 32 x 20,5 cm. More prints are available, uncoloured as well as coloured.
