Emanuel Sweert (1552-1612) was a Dutch florist and in charge of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II of Germany who commissioned this work. Sweert displayed the book which was a picture book as much as a plant catalogue at the Frankfurt Fair where he also sold the plants depicted in the Florilegium. – Modern hand coloured copper engravings after an original coloured copy ; 34 x 21 cm plate size; all in exc. condition except for the title page which had some paper loss restored; please note some descrepancy in the paper colour. – We also still have some uncoloured plates for £200 each; jpgs on request.
