Emmanuel Sweerts was a Dutch florist and in charge of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II of Germany who commissioned this work. Sweerts displayed the book which was a picture book as much as a plant catalogue at the Frankfurt Fair where he also sold the plants depicted in the Florilegium. - The plates in this section have been coloured by one of England's most experienced colourist according to an original coloured copy of the book.
