BUFFON, Georges-Louis Leclerc comte de (1707-1788): La Cane Musquee Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière

Paris 1849-67

mod. hand col. copper engravings; plate size 23 x 17 cm; thin paper; some minor tears usually not affecting image o/w vg cond.

Buffon (1707-1788) was born into an aristocratic family in Burgundy, France, and became Keeper of the Royal Garden in Paris, making it the centre for scientific studies and experiments. He set out to compile a book containing all that was known about the Natural World. His Histoire Naturelle…consisted of 15 volumes followed by another seven of which the last one was not published until after his death.

These are examples of the many engravings on birds; unusually for most zoological depictions, all his animals were shown in their natural habit with beautifully detailed background scenes.
