We are very pleased to offer these beautiful images of shells, jelly fish, plankton and other sea creatures by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist.
He discovered and classified many new species, introduced many new technical terms, like ‘ecology’ and ‘stem cell’ and was a staunch supporter and promoter of Darwin’s theories.
Between 1899 and 1904, he produced ‘Kunstformen’, consisting of 100 prints of various organisms and published in sets of ten; these images were based on his own sketches and watercolours. A second issue, only containing 30 of the prints, was published in 1924.
The images were arranged symmetrically for maximum visual impact and influenced greatly early 20th century design and art.
