Meisner, Daniel (1585 - 1625): Elsenor. in Dennemarck.
Paulus Fürst, Nürnberg 1637–1638
copper engraved view; plate 10 x 15 cm. some faint staining and some browning; marginal contemporary ink stain; o/w vg cond. verso blank; pagination B74; text in German and Latin.
A very charming view of Kronborg aka Helsingør with its castle which has been immortalised in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. From Meisner’s ‘Sciographia Cosmica’ as the ‘Thesaurus philopoliticus oder Politisches Schatzkästlein’ was known before 1637.
Kronborg Castle was built in 1420 but burnt down and was rebuilt since.Kronborg was once one of the most important towns in Europe, and ships passing through the Baltic Sea had to pay the tolls at the castle. In 2000, it was made a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
