Budai, Ésaiás (1766-1841): A' FÖLD ÖT RÉSZEINEK LERAJZOLÁSA. + AMERIKA. - AFRIKA. - ASIA. - EUROPA.
original coloured copper engraved maps. plate 33 x 44 cm. very soft crease in centre but does not appear to be a genuine centrefold; edges frayed as issued; nice thick paper; a few short marginal tears not affecting image; exc. cond.
A very rare set of the World and the four continents from an Hungarian atlas ‘Oskolai Magyar Uj Atlas’ (New School Atlas), the first Hungarian school atlas. The atlas was assembled by Budai and the maps were engraved by Gabor Eros (world), David Pethes (America, Europe) and Josef Pap (Africa, Asia). Though there is no indication that the maps were ever bound within an atlas, they were part of this atlas together with further seven maps of European countries. The maps are based on similar maps from contemporary French atlases.
Budai was an Hungarian geography teacher who studied in Oxford and Göttingen before he became a professor at a college in Debrecen, the centre of Hungarian mapmaking at the time.
